Your Mac’s Mail app is a powerful email client, and for many, the default app configuration in plenty for getting day-to-day email tasks done. But for those who demand more power and functionality, it’s a great idea to customize the toolbar at the top of the Mail app so you have quick and easy access to the functions you use the most.

In Outlook 2016’s mail folders, unread emails are distinguished by showing subjects in small blue font as below screenshot shown. This may be not obvious enough to highlight unread emails. In this article, we provide a solution to highlight all unread emails with bigger red font.

Highlight unread (new incoming) email messages in Outlook
  1. The Outlook for Mac experience, now available for preview in Insider Fast, has been updated to enhance performance and elevate productivity. The new Outlook for Mac is powered by the Microsoft Cloud and connects using Microsoft sync technology. It brings updates across Mail, Search, and Calendar exp.
  2. Compose your emails with style and rich formatting in Outlook and make sure that people who prefer or need a plain text version, get it automatically. With so many viruses and malware spread by rich-text or HTML messages, relying on plain text isn't a bad idea for all your outgoing emails.
  3. The next step will set Outlook as your default mail application for your Mac laptop. Close Microsoft Outlook. Open the Mac Mail application. In the menu bar, click Mail Preferences. Click on the General button. Change the Default email reader option from Mail to Microsoft Outlook.

You can change mail folders’ view settings to highlight all unread emails automatically in Outlook. Please do as follows:

1. In the Mail view, open the mail folder where you will highlight unread emails.

2. Click View > View Settings to open the Advanced View Settings dialog box.

3. In the Advanced View Settings dialog box, please click the Conditional Formatting button. See screenshot:

4. Now you get into the Conditional Formatting dialog box, please click to highlight the Unread messages option in the Rules for this view box, and click the Font button. See screenshot:

5. In the popping up Font dialog box, please set the highlight formatting as you need.

In my case, I set the highlight formatting as Segoe UI, and Red Bigger Bold Italic font. See screenshot:
